As part of our mission to bring together artists from the area and inspire the up-and-coming artists throughout the region, Vitamin Studio is excited to present Visual Manifesto: Exposing Works by Emerging UWL Artists, featuring a variety of works, including printmaking, photography, drawing, painting, metal work, sculpture, ceramics and graphic design. The student artists showing their work are enrolled in ART 399 Professional Practices, which aims to prepare students to be successful in the professional art world. To help prepare them for the professional world Vitamin Studio is providing their space for them to hang, advertise and hold an exhibition outside UWL.
Opening Reception: Friday, November 18, 5-7 pm

This time of the year is so busy. Jurying for the Wild Things show at the PH, classes at VS, Critiques, VS Grand Re-Opening/3 year celebration, show deadlines, and art fair deadlines.

On top of that I just did a couple new dry point prints. Will be posting images soon.

Studio Warming Party - Vitamin Studio

Green Bay Street Studio is now Vitamin Studio! And to celebrate, we are having a Studio Warming reception on Saturday, November 6, 2010, beginning at 7 pm. We haven't fully unpacked or gotten completely settled in, so we need the help of our friends and neighbors to warm up the studio and make it start feeling like home. Come to see our new, expanded location and the art we've been making over the last few months. We have a small gallery space now, and we'll be filling it with all the art we probably shouldn't have moved and putting it all on sale!!! We're so excited about our new space and how it's coming along, and we can't wait to give you a sneak peak!

“In Shades of Gray” explores the use of monochromatic, “black and white” in art. By eliminating the use of color, artists must address the other elements in their work and thus be challenged to look at their process ina new light. The Pump House Regional Arts Center is challenging artists to submit work for a juried exhibition, in media such as sculpture, paper, ceramics, paint, wood, metal, or any other media that artists may choose to work with, including photography. The use of color will not be permitted.

Since they work in the same space, the two young artists for this month’s Visual Arts Series at the Marie W. Heider Center for the Arts — entitled Human/Nature — know each other well. Still, Jenn Bushman and Matt

Duckett had never put on a show together before.

Both have been deeply involved with the Green Bay Street Studio in La Crosse (which is in the process of moving to downtown La Crosse and changing its name to Vitamin Studio), but they are no strangers to the Heider Center either.

“When we were asked if we wanted to exhibit this year, we couldn’t pass it up,” Duckett said. “I think the Heider Center is a surprising institution — there’s nothing like it in La Crosse. For a small community, it’s such an amazing facility.”

Bushman’s first experience with the Heider Center came two years ago, when she was invited to see a show there.

“I hadn’t heard much about it, but once I arrived, I was amazed,” she said. “It is so exciting to see such a wonderful establishment available for the community and for the students.

“I am so honored to have an exhibition there. I hope everyone will enjoy it and that students will be inspired by two young local artists.”

Along with Duckett — who is also an arts administrator at the Pump House Regional Art Center in La Crosse — Bushman teaches figurative drawing.

“Since the mid-2000’s, my work has involved the human form and the exploration of lines and contours,” Bushman said.

Recently, she’s been branching out into exploring the lines, contours and textures in nature. “My explorations have evolved into monochromatic images of the leaves of cabbage and other plants,” she said.

Duckett’s current work is more figurative. “It’s people-centered, on the verge of portraiture,” he said. “Although our portfolios might seem divergent, they are more alike than they seem at first.”

“As we prepared for the show, we realized we both had works in figures and in flora,” Bushman said. “By including both themes, we hope the viewer will be able to see how the strength of the lines and contours of my drawings transcend into my paintings and how the attention to shapes and details in Matt’s figure drawing transcend into his paintings of portraits and landscapes.”

It's time for GBSS' Halloween Party! This costume party will be held on Friday, October 30, starting at 8 pm and going all night. Dust off your sewing machine and shake the spiders out of your masks, since we have some pretty awesome costumes lined up, and some great ideas to boot, so the challenge is on. There will haunting music, classic horrific movies, as well as other terrifying things too horrible to mention. Dress in sinister fashion or suffer the consequences. And how about a prize for the best and weirdest costumes? We're not advertising this year, but instead inviting all of our friends, and yours. Pass it on to anyone you would like to have there!

WOW Mural

For the past few months Matt and I have been working on a mural commission for WOW (Walls of Wittenberg). We finished our mural a week and a half ago and it's been up at the corner of 4th and Main St. in the old Indian Weavings building. It will be up until the 24th of October. It was quite an adventure, and we are so happy with the completed mural.
Now that this is complete, we will start decorating for the Halloween party and then I will start another garden series painting. Can't wait!

Well I made it in time for the Mid-West Biannual Juried Art Exhibition. Might do a little shading yet, but basically it's complete. This painting was a lot of fun. Hard to get into at first, since I just did one similar, and this one was a little more tedious, but in the end I enjoyed getting loose and allowing more paint onto the canvas. I started out very thin in the middle and on the outer edge of the canvas applied more paint and I love how it turned out.
