Artist Statement

Since the mid 2000s, my work has involved the human form and the exploration of lines and contours. In my recent work, I continue my exploration of lines and contours in the makeup of nature through the exploration of plant's mass and produce as well as the figure. These explorations have evolved into monochromatic images of the leaves of cabbage plants, creating an abstract examination of the textures and forms of the plant. In this way, the image of the plant transcends notions of “produce” and “utility,” and challenges genre and subject matter without overtly defying the object or subject. From these paintings I take a clip of the plant and enlarge it onto another canvas, intensifying the clip to create a new interpretation of the original painting, in much the same way a botanist might magnify and examine a plant for her own ends, or a drop of water might refract a section of a plant.

I usually work on several series of work concurrently, working on an oil painting while etching plates for my next intaglio print. Often times elements from my paintings, photos, drawings and prints are utilized in other work, which inform or cross-pollinate each other.
